Can I be honest here? Before kids, I didn’t have a morning routine. I know what you're thinking, everyone has a morning routine! I didn’t. If you ask anyone who knows me they will tell you I’m a night owl. When I worked as a nurse, I worked the night shift and LOVED it! So you can imagine by staying up late, I wasn’t a morning person. My morning consisted of waking up and racing out the door to get to school/work. That was until I became a mom. Here is what a typical morning for me looks like.
Early Riser
I’ve never been one to wake up early if I didn’t have to. After having kids, you don’t get the option to stay in bed as long as you want to. Plus, being a stay-at-home mom to three I don’t get a lot of alone time. So to begin my morning routine, I get up early before my kids so that I am able to have some me-time before switching over into mom mode. I like to try and get up about an hour and a half before my kids. It's nice to be with yourself, drink some coffee, or even walk outside for a little early morning exercise. Although I was never a morning person, I find that waking up before everyone else allows me to be more productive throughout the day. That’s one thing I think every mom needs is to have some me-time before your kids get up in the morning.
Coffee & Daily Devotional
The first thing I grab after getting up is a cup of coffee. Sometimes I’ll have hot or iced coffee. Depending on my mood that day. It's important to wake up and do something you love, which for me is drinking coffee! I also have a daily devotional book for moms that I am currently reading. I will read the devotional for that day and finish my first cup of coffee. I used to be an avid reader so being able to get some reading time in really helps me start my day out on the best foot.
Skin Care
After my coffee and reading, I’ll head to the bathroom to wash my face and get ready for the day. I also use serums and self-tanner daily so that’s a part of my routine. One regret I have is not having a skincare routine in my 20s. Now that I am in my 30s I love my skincare routine. I’ve noticed such a big difference in my acne-prone skin with a good skin care regimen. It not only wakes me up, but it also is great for my skin and health!
Usually, by this time, my kids are starting to get up for the day. If they haven’t then I will either check my emails or scroll social media till I need to wake the kids up. I try really hard to not be on my phone as much with my kids around. It’s very hard to do and I definitely haven’t found a great balance as of now. Although it doesn't seem like much, these three things really help me to start my day off right. My kids’ are under 9. So In the early years I wasn’t able to do this but now that they're older it’s easier. I hope this gave you some ideas that you can incorporate into your own morning routine and have a successful start to your day! Which benefits not only you but your children too!
