Nothing says winter like the delicious explosion of a hot cocoa bomb in a steaming cup of milk; am I right? It’s like dessert in a mug!

The great thing about hot cocoa bombs is that you don’t have to buy them from a store and you don’t have to wait for it to be below freezing to enjoy them. I’m here to share with you a super simple hot chocolate bomb DIY that I promise is both delicious and cute.

Supplies & Ingredients

  • Silicone chocolate mold (sphere-shaped)
  • Melting chocolate (any color; any flavor)
  • Hot cocoa mix
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Sprinkles/decorating embellishments
  • Microwave safe bowl
  • Silicone basting brush

Instructions

Melt chocolate according to package instructions in a microwave-safe bowl.

Once melted, paint the chocolate into the silicone molds, brushing up the sides and covering all of the edges. Be sure to leave the middle empty/hollow as this will be like a cup to hold the cocoa mix.

Place molds in freezer until fully hardened (around half an hour or so).

Carefully “pop” the chocolate shells out of the molds.

Fill up one chocolate “cup” with hot cocoa mix.

Add a few marshmallows on top of the cocoa mix.

Melt more chocolate, following directions from the first step. Spin the rim of an empty chocolate cup into the melted chocolate.

Place the empty cup on top of the cocoa-filled cup, using the melted chocolate rim as a sort of glue. You should now have a sphere!

Brush around the center with the silicone brush to smooth out the chocolate. Add additional melted chocolate to fill any cracks or holes.

Repeat this process until you have as many spheres as you would like. When finished, place them back in the freezer to fully harden.

Once hard, remove from freezer. Now it’s time to jazz these bombs up.

Melt more chocolate. Here you could use a different color or flavor. Or even use caramel or toffee.

Drizzle over the top of the bomb. Sprinkle sprinkles (hehe), chopped nuts, crumbled candy bars, etc. over the top of the drizzle.

Let harden (again). Store in freezer until ready to gift or serve!

Now you have homemade hot cocoa bombs!

To serve; heat milk to near boiling and pour into a mug. Drop in the hot cocoa bomb (carefully) into a mug, pour over heated milk, and wait/watch it “explode” into a delicious cup of hot cocoa. You may need to stir it a bit. :)

To gift, place a bomb in a foil cupcake liner and then place it in a clear plastic baggie. Tie the bag with some ribbon, twine, or yarn. Add a cute tag and voila! A yummy homemade gift from the heart.
